Mongolian Ship

13th-century Mongolian ship was double-bottomed

Japanese researchers say a 13th-century Mongolian warship found in waters off Nagasaki Prefecture, western Japan, was double-bottomed, unlike merchant ships of the time.
The wreck was discovered last year on the seabed off the shores of Takashima Island in Matsuura City. It is believed to have been part of a fleet sent by Mongol ruler Kublai Khan to invade Japan about 700 years ago.

Researchers studying the wreck say the ship was at least 27 meters long and had two wooden frameworks on top of each other in the lower part of its hull.
This suggests the ship's bottom was reinforced by an inner layer of wood, apparently to make it waterproof.

Okinawa Prefecture's University of the Ryukyus has announced that large parts of a Mongolian ship presumed to have been part of a 13th century Yuan Dynasty-era invasion fleet has been discovered on the seafloor near Nagasaki. The find is the first intact wreck related to invasion attempts of Japan by the Mongolian ruler, Kublai Khan.

The archaeology team, headed by Yoshifumi Ikeda ... believes that the vessel wreckage will provide vital insights into the Khan-led Mongol attacks between 1274 and 1281, which had been mostly based on information gathered from drawings and documents, and not real artifacts.
